Vatos Urban Tacos, is a Fusion Mexican restaurant that UNITless had the privilege to work with since the beginning of our firm. After four years of operating one of the best restaurant in Itaewon, the client came to us to expand their restaurant to incorporate a venue space. The challenge that was given to us was to make a connective yet independent space that had a versatile design.
‘Vatos Urban Tacos’ (이하 바토스)는 퓨전 멕시칸 레스토랑이자 유닛레스 설립이래 다년간 함께해온 최고의 파트너사 입니다. 처음 이태원점(본점)을 저희에게 의뢰 한지 4년후 바토스는 복합문화공간을 갖추고자 저희에게 또다시 설계를 의뢰해왔습니다. 기존 모습과 다르지만, 유사성을 갖는 것이 이번 설계의 목표였습니다.
Versatility Emphasized
The venue space needed to be able to host a variety of events and could also become an extension of the existing dining hall. Considering the demands that the clients had, we decided to divide the site into four different sections which are: waiting zone, venue space, full service bar, and kitchen. Three of those sections were designed to be able to blur into one another by fully opening a custom made steel door that can vanish into the utility rooms. To add to the adaptive nature of the space, we designed a transforming wall detail that can turn into a two-tier table. By doing so we were able to meet the criteria of the space, and pay closer attention to the details.
저희가 계획할 새로운 공간은 복합문화공간(VENUE)의 역할 뿐만 아니라 때로는 레스토랑으로 탈바꿈 할 수 있는 다양성을 지닌 곳이었습니다. 이런 클라이언트의 요구에 부합하기 위해 저희는 새로운 공간을 주방/바/홀/웨이팅으로 4분할 하여 각 공간들이 서로 유기적으로 혼용 될 수 있도록 노력하였습니다. 슬라이딩 도어를 이용해 공간을 확장하기도 하고 벽면 선반을 통해 한 공간이 여러가지의 용도로 쓰일 수 있게 계획 하는 등 다양성을 극대화하는 작업을 진행하였습니다.
Detail Scrutinized
Setting itself apart from the other projects with Vatos, the expansion project had to be mature in style and meticulous in detail. All the elements that created Vatos’s style were re-examined and crafted carefully, to make a rough industrial design strangely perfect and luxurious. Everything from the chandelier to the wall installation and to the furniture were painstakingly handcrafted to meet the high standard of the client.
바토스 어반컬렉티브는 기존의 다른 바토스 매장들과는 달리 좀 더 성숙해진 디자인과 세밀한 디테일이 필요했습니다. 기존에 사용되었던 인더스트리얼 디자인 요소들을 다듬어 완성도 높은 디테일을 만들기 위해 가구부터 샹들리에 이르는 작은 요소 하나까지 수작업을 통한 맞춤제작으로 채워 나갔습니다.
First Project Revisited
Returning to the first project that the firm did four years ago, it was a unique opportunity to perfect our own work and to display our growth. Even though the concept could not change, we found elements in the design that could be pushed further to elevate the establishment to a new height.
첫 바토스 프로젝트를 하고 4년이 지난 후에 기존 작품을 재해석해서 새로운 디자인 요소를 만들어가는 작업은 아주 흥미롭고 새로운 경험이었습니다. 기존의 컨셉에서 크게 벗어나지 않으면서 디자인 요소들을 창의적으로 변형하여 새로운 공간을 창조하는데 중점을 두었습니다.
